Rapids July 2018 Community Recap
The second month of the 2018 PGCBL season for the Rapids proved to be an exciting one. Amidst a tight playoff push that concluded with the Rapids clinching a playoff spot on the final day of the regular season, their performance in the community was also worthy of recognition.
Upstate Youth Baseball Association Game
Following a July 8th home game, the Watertown Rapids hosted the Babe Ruth league All-Star game. Players split into both dugouts rooting on their team, including some friendly back and forth bragging. The game was close the whole way and both teams had a great time.
Clayton Antique Boat Museum
On an off day for the team (July 11th), The Antique Boat Museum hosted the Rapids. Players and coaches toured the museum, were treated to a shore dinner, and then were taken out onto the St. Lawrence river in three different boats that the museum conducts tours on. For a portion of the team, this was their first time to the 1000 Islands.
On July 12th, pitcher Cameron Guarino, General Manager Brandon Noble, and Marketing Assistant Nick English attended a Cub Scout camp in Fort Drum. At the event they answered baseball questions and talked about the science of baseball.
Promoting Samaritan Health Night
With the Samaritan Health Employee Appreciation Night approaching the following week, Rapids’ GM Brandon Noble and Marketing Assistant Nick English spent some time on July 13th in the cafeteria of Samaritan Medical Center. The two staff members spread information on the upcoming game and talked with people about the season.
LaFargeville Central School Summer Recreation
Hometown pitcher Matt Valin and fellow players Xavier Czepiel and Ben Maycock attended the LaFargeville Summer Recreation program on July 16th. The players signed autographs, took pictures, and played catch with all the kids. LaFargeville native and Marketing Assistant Logan Labiendo helped organize the trip for the Rapids.
Willie Putnam Tournament
With the Willie Putnam Tournament taking place, two Rapids’ players made an appearance in Chaumont on Sunday July 22nd. Outfielder Bailey Lewis and Pitcher MJ Dziczkowski played catch with players of the Lyme and Croghan 12U teams. The players also signed autographs and watched a few innings of the game.
Vintage Baseball - Sackets Harbor Battlefield
July 22nd was a busy day for the Rapids as three other players attended the annual vintage baseball game in Sackets Harbor. Pitchers Addison Pawelek, Wandy Brito, and Nick Cowen played as members of the Sackets Ontarios as they took on the Genesee County Museum All-Stars. The players learned about old-time rules, uniforms, and equipment.
Adams Center Youth Baseball Camp
With an off day on July 24th, three players were able to attend a youth baseball camp at the Grace Community Church baseball field in Adams Center, NY. Catcher Nolan Wilson and infielders Daniel Little and William Heurtin stopped by the camp to help instruct drills, interact with the kids, and take pictures.
Jefferson Community College Baseball Camp
In the final week of the regular season, JCC and the YMCA hosted a baseball camp on the JCC softball field. On Monday the 30th, Field Manager David Anderson and Assistant Coach Nick Ascue stopped by to give out tickets to the campers, answer questions, and sign autographs.
