Local Southpaw Set To Join Rapids’ Roster
Watertown, NY - April 11, 2018 - LaFargeville native Matthew Valin will be taking the mound this summer as a member of the Watertown Rapids and will look to continue his power pitching in the PGCBL.
Valin is a 2015 graduate of LaFargeville Central School, where he played varsity baseball for the Red Knights from 2012 - 2015. He is currently on the pitching staff at SUNY Cortland that as of April 10th, is ranked 10th in the country for Division III baseball according to NCAA.com.
During his career at LaFargeville, Valin was selected as a Frontier League All-Star from 2013 - 2015. After his successful high school career, he went on to pitch for the Lazers of Onondaga Community College (OCC) from 2015 - 2017. While at OCC, he broke the OCC single season strikeout record with 104 punchouts.
The 6’2” 200lbs. lefty is in his first season with the Cortland Red Dragons where he has posted an ERA of 0.93 over 9.2 innings of work, collecting 18 strikeouts to date. In the six games Valin has appeared in, the Red Dragons are 5-1. Valin is currently in his junior year and majoring in Physical Education.
“I’m excited to play for the Rapids this summer,” Valin said. “Being able to stay close to home and play in one of the top collegiate summer leagues is a great opportunity.”
Rapids’ field manager David Anderson added this about the signing of Valin, “I’m extremely excited to add Matt to the pitching staff. He is a very talented lefty that brings experience and swing-and-miss type of stuff to our rotation. He’s already pitched in the league and knows what it takes to be successful in it."
The Rapids inaugural Opening Day game at the Fairgrounds in Watertown will be Saturday, June 2 at 7:05pm. Season Tickets and 10-Pack Tickets are on sale now.
