Watertown Rapids hire strength and conditioning expert as assistant coach

Watertown, New York – April 5, 2018.     Collegiate baseball players signing on with the Watertown Rapids this season will have a unique benefit.   Rapids Manager David Anderson today announced the hiring of an assistant coach who has a knock-out resume in the discipline of strength and conditioning, as well as great coaching skills and experience.

His name is Caleb Abney and he has a Masters Degree in Kinesiology from the University of Georgia  and is a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (C.S.C.S.), giving him a strong skill set to assist Rapids players with their training in addition to his coaching duties.

Abney has held positions with the Atlanta Braves and Tampa Bay Rays. Between the two, he played and coached baseball in Melbourne, Australia, and he’s currently an Assistant Coach at King University in Bristol, Tenn.    Abney played college baseball at Covenant College in Lookout Mountain, GA, earning All-Conference academic honors all four years.

His extensive resume also includes a season as the head coach of Westminster Christian Academy in Watkinsville, GA where he guided the team to the Final 8 of the GISA State Playoffs. He has  also served as a coach and instructor for various levels of youth baseball, a fitness and trainer instructor, and returned to Covenant College, his alma mater, where he was in charge of the program’s offense.

“Caleb has an impressive and varied background in baseball and a great skill set,” Anderson says, “I’m looking forward to working with him. His knowledge of baseball is high and his training background is a great additional asset to help our guys with their workouts.”

“Caleb brings a unique set of skills,” says Rapids Co-owner Mike Schell. “His background in strength and conditioning will be a great resource for our young players as they develop over the summer.”

The Rapids inaugural Opening Day game at the Fairgrounds in Watertown will be Saturday, June 2 at 7:05pm and will feature a fireworks show after the game. Season Tickets and 10-Pack Tickets are on sale now. The Rapids are seeking Host Families for the 2018 summer. Being a Host Family is a great experience, easier than you may think, and Host Families receive free season tickets. The Rapids can be reached at 315-836-1545 or directly to Brandon Noble at rapidsgm@gmail.com.
