WATERTOWN, NY - The Watertown Rapids have proudly announced the creation of a new community initiative program, "The Rapids Support Team." The new initiative will strive to build community spirit and engage North Country residents through the rich tradition of Watertown baseball, while promoting events, supporting local activities, and giving back to Jefferson County.
The first initiative under the new program is the announcement of the inaugural "Watertown 9 Wall of Fame." The new Wall of Fame will showcase the history of the nine most famous baseball players who played in Watertown. Members of the community will be able to vote in their selections for the wall in 2021.
General Manager Nick Czerow said "This is an important program for us to announce during a time in which a pandemic has affected everyone. The Rapids want to state the importance of being invested in Watertown and the North Country as a whole. The new program gives us a platform to entertain and give back to great hard-working people. We have a lot of history to be proud of at the Alex T. Duffy Fairgrounds. If we bring people a little more together through our tradition then we are taking an important step forward."
"The Rapids Support Team" will seek and implement community programs that will educate, entertain, and support community residents through "America's favorite pastime." The program will also showcase companies, non-profits, and individuals who spend time giving back to the community. The Rapids will also be seeking sponsors with goals of community building.
Czerow continued, "There are a lot of fantastic community partners and non-profits that do a remarkable job of standing with the community. We are in a unique position of being a source of entertainment and comfortable with hosting 24+ events a year. We want to use our expertise to expand into hosting off-season events to lift Watertown up as much as possible. We have a lot of opportunities on the drawing board. The next step is to find the safest way to bring them to life during this pandemic."
Details of the first "Wall of Fame" initiative will be announced soon. Please follow the Watertown Rapids at "watertown-rapids.com" and on social media for updates.
The Rapids are members of the nationally respected Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League, a wooden baseball bat summer league that features top college players from all over the country. The Rapids began play at Alex T. Duffy Fairgrounds in 2018, suspending play due to the pandemic in 2020 and are preparing to resume play in May 2021.
