Former JCC Cannoneer to Manage Rapids on Field in 2019

Rapids press conference 2

WATERTOWN, NY - St. Lawrence University assistant coach and former JCC Cannoneer captain Mike Wood will lead the Rapids on the field in 2019, it was announced today.  In a press conference held at Jefferson Community College, Wood was introduced to Rapids fans and the community.

Wood brings valuable experience from his young coaching career to the Rapids. He is currently in his second season as assistant coach at St. Lawrence University, while working toward his Master’s Degree in Educational Leadership. During the summer of 2018, Wood served as assistant coach and assistant general manager for the Boynton Beach Buccaneers of the South Florida Collegiate Baseball League.

Prior to beginning his coaching career, Wood played four years of collegiate baseball, beginning on the field that he will now manage. Wood held down third base for the Jefferson Community College (JCC) Cannoneers for two seasons during 2014 and 2015. During his sophomore campaign, Wood was team captain and eventually earned team most valuable player. Wood’s success at the junior college level lead to an athletic scholarship at Davis & Elkins College, a division two school in West Virginia. His success and leadership continued as he was named team captain for his senior season.

When asked about what he’s looking forward to as field manager of the Watertown Rapids, Wood said, ‘I’m mostly excited for the fact that it’s in Watertown where I have roots. My collegiate baseball career began at JCC and I spent two amazing years there. To have this opportunity to coach in the prestigious PGCBL and for the Watertown Rapids is a dream come true.”

Rapids general manager Brandon Noble is confident in the team’s hiring of Wood. “As Mike’s teammate at JCC for two years, I saw first hand his hard work and leadership. We’re thrilled to add a brilliant baseball mind and a young energetic coach to our organization. Mike’s knowledge of the North Country was also a key factor in his hiring as he will connect well with the community.”

As Wood builds the Rapids’ roster and prepares for the season ahead, he has a few clear goals in mind. “My goal is to keep building the positive impact the team has in the community and help this organization become a mainstay in Watertown for years to come. I also look to build upon the success from the inaugural season and want to make fans and supporters of Rapids baseball proud. Most importantly, my goal is to make sure every student-athlete leaves better, in some way, than when they came to us in the beginning of the summer.”

The Rapids are members of the highly touted Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League, playing their home games at the Alex T. Duffy Fairgrounds.
