LaFargeville’s Valin Slotted to Start Watertown Rapids Home Opener

Watertown, NY - May 18, 2018 - When the Rapids take the field for their inaugural Opening Day on June 2nd, a familiar face will be starting on the mound.IMG-2257.JPG Jefferson County’s own Matt Valin has been chosen by Field Manager David Anderson as the Rapids starting pitcher.

Valin signed with the newest member of the Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League in early April. The team is compiled of college baseball players from across the country and from all levels including NCAA Division I, Division II, Division III, and the NAIA.

When asked about his thoughts on being named starting pitcher for the Rapids’ home opener, Valin said “I’m excited to pitch the home opener and be able to pitch in front of friends and family, some who haven’t seen me pitch since high school.”

Field Manager David Anderson made this decision with confidence. “I’m excited to have Matt on the mound for us for our home opener. He has experience in the league and has the competitive nature that you look for to help kick off a season.” Anderson also touched on the team as a whole. “We’re very pleased with how the roster has come together. We’ve been fortunate to sign elite players from all over the country and look forward to building on the successful 2018 seasons they have already put together.”

Before Valin joins the Rapids, he will be competing in the NCAA Division III tournament with his SUNY Cortland Red Dragons. The Red Dragons are making their 26th straight tournament appearance and will host the New York Regional at Falcon Park in Auburn, NY from May 17th - 21st.

Valin and the Red Dragons finished the regular season at 32-10 (15-2 conference) and named SUNYAC regular season champions, before falling to Oswego State in the SUNYAC finals. Valin collected 22 strikeouts over 14 innings pitched and looks to build off that success coming into the summer.

“Pitching in the NCAA tournament will benefit me because every pitch is important and could affect the outcome of the game. I have to make sure that I go out and attack with my best stuff in order to be successful.” Valin added about his anticipated experience in the NCAA tournament before joining the Rapids.

The Rapids are entering their inaugural season, joining the prestigious Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League. The home opener is June 2 at 7:05pm. For more information
