In their inaugural season as members of the Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League, the Watertown Rapids will proudly send eight players to the All-Star game to represent the team. Premier collegiate baseball players from across the PGCBL will head to Elmira on July 18th to compete.

The 13-team league will be split into two teams, East versus West. Watertown will compete on the West team, alongside Adirondack, Jamestown, Geneva, Newark, and the hosts, Elmira. The two all-star teams were voted on by coaches on Monday July 9th. Eight total Rapids earned their way to Elmira, including two pitchers and six position players.

Left-handed starting pitcher Jack Buckley (Franklin & Marshall / Bronx, NY) begins the list for the Rapids. As of July 9th, Buckley has started five games, collecting a 2-1 record, 1.80 earned run average (ERA), and striking out 30 batters over 30 innings pitched.

Coming out of the bullpen, submarine right-handed pitcher Robbie Frongello (Richmond / Apex, NC) has pitched 23.1 innings. Frongello also has a 2-1 record with an 1.92 ERA and 19 strikeouts.

Catcher Kenny Bergmann (UConn / Philadelphia, PA) begins the list of position players for the Rapids. Bergmann has played in 17 games with a batting average of .359, including 8 extra base hits and 12 runs batted in (RBIs).

Infielder Michael Russell (Stony Brook / Staten Island, NY) has played in 24 games, earning a .330 batting average, 11 extra base hits, and leads the team with 20 RBIs.

Shortstop Daniel Little (Richmond / Nicholsville, KY) leads the PGCBL in stolen bases with 20 in 24 games played.

Infielder William Heurtin (Rhodes / Covington, LA) has a .320 batting average, 16 RBIs, and 16 walks.

Outfielder Julian Kurych (Wilmington / Middletown, DE) leads the team in runs scored and doubles with 25 and 11 respectively. Kurych also has produced a .360 batting average in 24 games, adding 16 RBIs and 14 walks.

Rounding out the Rapids’ all-star selections and the lone starter for the game is first baseman and outfielder Alex Mumme. The power hitter leads the league in home runs with 7 through 20 games played. Mumme also leads the team in batting average at .389 and second on the team in RBIs behind Russell with 19.

When asked about what it means to have eight players representing Watertown in their first season, Field Manager David Anderson said, “It’s great to have a strong representation in the All-Star Game in our Inaugural Season. They’re excited for the opportunity and will represent the Rapids well.”

The Rapids will also have the ability to send a player to compete in the home run derby prior to the game. This selection will be announced in the coming days as all-star plans are finalized.
